I am an accomplished business professional
with an uncanny
ability to bring new ideas, new revenue streams and new profits to just
about any
businesses. I have temporarily suspended consulting activity
(well, sort of) to seriously investigate
the cognitive skills required by anybody making today's tough
decisions. Why? Because ironically, decision making – in
politics, business and life - is the most
important yet least understood thing any human ever does. (A
preliminary decision-making blog with four comprehensive but still-draft
essays can be found by clicking here.)
My 40-years of business service
focused on designing and executing strategic business decisions for a
variety of enterprises
operating
in the global information technology industry. I spent most of that
career in
Silicon Valley where my P&L assignments and achievements were unusually divers - and some even groundbreaking. For example, I was recognized by PC magazine for designing
the 'most innovative' PC software; led a team which developed the
'Product of the Year'; was an architect of the world's most powerful distributed computing network to support
the U.S. National Ignition Facility; and led teams that raised
millions of dollars from first-tier
investment groups like Kleiner Perkins. Along the way, my work was featured in CNN, Time Magazine and Tom Peter's best seller, Liberation Management..
I left Silicon Valley after serving as vice president of
marketing for Hitachi Global Data Systems producing marketing systems for 3,000 people operating in over 30 countries. Then, as an independent business advisor my client base was also diverse.
Listed by annual revenue, they included a:
• Distributor of Hospital Electronics
($100M)
• Disk Drive Test Equipment Manufacturer
($25M)
• International Print Broker ($10M)
• Manufacturer of In-Store Kiosks ($5M)
• Distributor of Vehicle Emergency
Equipment ($3M)
My management consulting forte is business
turnarounds,
especially P&L uplifts through product line reconstruction and
improved organizational efficiency.
To lead in this field, I
have developed systems to quickly increase cash flow and the exit value
of the business. In doing this, I employ my expertise in: - Internal and external situation
analysis
- Developing integrated enterprise goals
- Creating strategies with
road maps
- Formulating product requirements
- Driving product development and
product management;
- Go-to-market
programs (direct and indirect sales, Web marketing and analytics);
- Sales force
productivity systems
- OEM, alliance and channel partnerships.
I have a B.A. in human behavior from the University
of California at Berkeley and an MBA from the Haas School of Business with additinal marketing
studies at
Stanford University. The work at Stanford supported teaching
marketing in the MBA program at Notre Dame de Namur University.
I am a native of Northern California, low handicap golfer, member
of the pro bono staff at the Lawrence Hall of Sciences at the University of
California, Berkeley and board member of the McIntyre Ranch Foundation involved
in equine assisted psychotherapy. My
intellectual passion is the integration of social biology with physics and
economics.
